Right so a little bit about myself and what I do.
I’m a Student based in the UK and have just finished my second year on a Media Production course. We do Short films, Documentaries, Music Videos, Web TV shows, Live events, Promos, etc etc, both in and outside of studio spaces. In my first year I primarily shot everything I did on the universities Sony Z1s. Whilst it is a solid camera I always found myself slightly disappointed at how flat and video like everything looked.
Enter HDSLRs (or whatever you want to call them!) and the way I shoot everything radically changed. Equal parts frustrating and rewarding, these cameras can be tricky to use but can produce pretty stunning footage in the right hands. Over the last few months I’ve seen the level of my productions rise to something I am now confident enough to start charging for (a concept that seemed pretty far away a year ago).
Its very often said (because its true) that ultimately “content is king”. Without a good story nobody will want to watch your boring film, no matter how shallow the depth of field is. Conversely I think higher production values often make people take your work more seriously and online that can mean the difference between someone watching your film to the end or clicking away after the first few seconds. I very much try to make student films not look too studenty!
Anyway the point of this blog is to share with you my gear, my workflow, the things I have learnt and the mistakes I have made. Whether you are completely new to DSLR film making or have experience shooting with them, there should be something you’ll find useful here.

Excellent blog!!! I'll be coming back frequently to learn more. Keep up the good work. I shoot Canon 550D and am a teacher of English from Slovakia. I spent 3 years in the UK as a student, au-pair, etc. and love Britain. Good luck with your studies!
